Valedictory Statement, BHjr132

Mr. Speaker,

I plan for this to be the last speech I make in this chamber. However I, like many of us here, appear to be addicted to the game of politics so I’m sure I will make the occasional appearance in the future.

I’d like to start by saying it’s been an absolute privilege and honour to represent the people of Waitematā for the last 10 months and to contribute to the national political agenda. It’s been an absolute privilege to be apart of the incredible Green team.

I am one of the few fortunate people to have represented the seat of Waitematā. To be elected to this parliament is a privilege, a privilege that few people are afforded, and I have always been mindful of that great honour. I believe that all members elected to this place enter politics because they want to make a difference. It is just that, on different sides of the House, we have a different idea of what makes a difference. We have a different vision, different beliefs and different philosophies, and we all strive to see that our vision becomes the reality. And, without a doubt, I believe the Green vision is the vision that should be the reality here in New Zealand and the one that benefits people the most. I have always been motivated by the need to make a difference and to see that the values of social justice, equity and egalitarianism are embraced in New Zealand. As a member of parliament, it is a unique opportunity to actually do this.

I first joined the Green Party on the 23rd of August 2018. I joined because I wanted to make a difference. I found the issues of health, the environment and the economy as the most important to me and the Green Party aligned with me on them. I soon found myself climbing the ranks in the Green Party and I was elected to Parliament as a List MP in the October 2018 election.

Myself and the Green Party have been in government for the majority of the time I’ve been in this chamber. I first started as Health Minister under Prime Minister AnswerMeNow1. Since then, I’ve served under imnofox, UncookedMeatloaf and finally ARichTeaBiscuit. I’ve taken up a multitude of roles such as Environment Minister and Māori Affairs Minister. I’ve also had the tiring but fun experience of writing a budget. We achieved many things during our time in government, I won’t go over all of them now but there are a few ones that stand out.

I am proud of the fact that New Zealand is beginning to tackle the mental health crisis, with the passage of the Zero Suicide Target and Suicide Reduction Act during my time as Health Minister.

I am proud of the fact that under 25s now have access to free counselling and funding has been achieved for youth mental health services and community mental health initiatives in places like schools.

I am proud of the fact that sanitary products are now GST exempt, reducing the cost of the essential items.

I am proud of the fact that all New Zealanders now have the ability to access a free annual dental checkup every year and low income families are provided with subsidised dental services.

I am proud of the fact that nurse and midwife pay was substantially increased twice during my time as Health Minister.

I am proud of the fact that we established a disability issues commission to advise the government on disability issues and ensure people with disabilities have an advocate in government.

I am proud of the fact that New Zealand is doing its part in the fight against climate change. We can do much more but during my time as Environment Minister we helped lay the foundations for the fight with funding for renewable energy, electric vehicles and low-emission food production research.

I was proud of the fact that we established a higher tax bracket for high earners and reduced the tax burden on low earners by reducing GST. I was disappointed to see the National government reverse those changes this term.

While I cannot claim sole credit for these achievements, I am proud to have been apart of the teams who have made them a reality. I have some regrets and some ‘what ifs’ but overall, I am happy with my performance during my time here.

I am one of only 47 people to have held the position of Leader of the Opposition. While it’s not the highest role you can hold in this political game, it was a great experience holding the government to account. I am disappointed that I was not able to lead my party back to government but I am confident the members on this side of the house will be sitting on the government benches again soon. While the Green Party is likely on its last legs, we have strong allies who will continue our mission in the future.

I have also had the privilege of being the Speaker of the House for the last 2 terms. I’ve had the chance to work with an amazing team of Deputy Speakers in both of those terms. It has certainly been a stressful but fun experience.

Now I come to the hard part. I would like to firstly thank the Green Party members who pre-selected me to run in the Waitematā by-election last November and who have continued to support me. Next, I would like to thank the wonderful people of Waitematā. You have been my inspiration. My motivation has been to make your lives better and have your voices heard in Wellington. You will always be in my heart. Thank you for the trust that you have placed in me. I have had the privilege to share your lives, to offer assistance to you, to accept offers of assistance from you, and to build friendships and relationships that will last well past my time in this parliament. I will not make any honorary mentions now, for there are too many people to name and I’m sure I’d forget people. I’ve worked with many people during my time here and it’s been an honour working with all of you.

The first speech I made in Parliament was on the Adjournment Debate prior to the 5th General Election. I will end the same way I ended that speech, “I wish all parties, MPs and candidates the best of luck in the election.”

Thank you, Mr Speaker. This has been an incredible experience. I will finish where I started. What an honour it has been to serve the people of Waitematā. Thank you very much.

so I guess im kinda weird or like broken or something its always hard to write anything true about myself but a laptop is the easiest thing and im using this place as like a personal journal for now so yeah. I happened to grow up in rough environment as a child I had suffered from a mentally and physically abusive step father for six years of my life. From 5 years old it was constant fear in my own home, and just note that my life before we had met my stepfather was calm and relaxed my mum was kind, loving and ambitious she had goals and stuff, but then he came over one day I guess my mum only got with him because he came off as very sweet and charming but it didn't take long for us to realise he had pretty bad 'anger issues' and a COMPLETE control freak. it started with all these rules like going to bed at 8 and waking up at 7, and not being allowed to have any sugar or just being banned from all these random little things, and honestly these rules weren't really the problem, it was when you would a break a rule that shit would go down, my step dad would absolutely loose his shit like he would full go mental hit us with really heavy household items and go around breaking things. I know being smacked doesn't really sound so bad but it was scary especially when I've originally come from a calm and peaceful place. And my brother who is five years older then me, hes always been the cool, passive child of the family, hes never wanted to hurt anyone or do any wrong really n he was the one who really made my childhood peaceful when there was any. but little did I know when he would go help my stepdad in the yard and messed something up or didn't do something exactly how he wanted it done then he would be punished by much worse things then I thought, he had been punched in the head multiple times and slapped and kicked n other worse things he was 10 and when i found out I was sick. I couldn't ever imagine my brother being treated like that by someone he was so kind. I don't really know why im writing all this I guess I just want to get it all out but im going to write in separate sections. After about a year of living with my stepdad my mum had fallen pregnant to their first child and he decided he wanted us all to move in at his house which its safe to say was the worst decision of our lives. understandably as a kid I hadn't the least idea what was going on but I thought I liked him n I thought he was good but boy oh boy was I wrong. anyways ill follow up in the next one cya oneoneon :)

Unreal Engine C++ Cast, why it is type-safe and its difference to static_cast and dynamic_cast.

Unreal Engine C++ Cast<T>(SomeObject) allows to dynamically cast an object type-safely. But what is the difference between Cast<T>, static_cast<T\> and dynamic_cast<T\*>*? I tried to explain everything in a short article.

TLDR:

  • Cast<T> has to be used for *UObjects* due to type safety; it will return *nullptr* in case of a failure in comparison with *static_cast*.
  • Cast<T> runtime cost is *O(1) or constant* in non-editor environment and *O(Depth(InheritanceTree))* in editor environment.
  • Cast<T> does not use *dynamic_cast*

Social coping mechanisms

Brain fog can make us clumsier, careless, and just plain absentminded, which can be pretty embarrassing or outright disabling. Do you have a good support network to help you out? Or do you try to hide it from others? How?

Personally, I often pretend to be stressed or anxious, because that's slightly more socially acceptable than just being that stupid or forgetful. When someone says they're feeling anxious, good people generally try to be understanding and not question any weird behaviors in order to avoid upsetting you, which is nice, at least when you're in a favorable social environment.

For example, I have terrible short term memory, and I often compensate by checking things over and over because I actually keep forgetting the information. That would normally be pretty weird, but the "pretend anxiety" is pretty much perfect for it, because pretty much everybody can sympathize with the feeling of being unsure and wanting to check something just in case, but much less so for severe forgetfulness like that. Thus, if and when people start to get weirded out, I just say something like "Oh, I'm just pretty stressed out, and just want to make sure I don't screw this up", and that is usually enough to satisfy their curiosity.

During those severe bad brain days when I'm confused and have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, even then this tactic can yield some results, at least some of the time. Again, pretending to just be stressed in the right kind of social environment has a chance of summoning some empathetic person to help you out with whatever is giving you trouble, which is pretty cool. They think they're just giving emotional reassurance, but in reality they're guiding you through something that just doesn't seem to make any sense at that time. I try not to do this too often, because it feels slightly manipulative, but sometimes I just don't have a choice when the bad days outnumber the good, and I just can't seem to be able to do something important on my own, no matter what. I do try to prioritize people whose job is to help others, like for bureaucracy stuff I go to some social workers, but sometimes even normal life stuff gives me trouble when it's bad enough. Like, even the gym routine that I've been doing for over 2 years can suddenly become confusing, at least when it's really bad, so having a supportive friend or even a random person can make all the difference then.

The Revenant Group is looking for players who want to be part of a specialised unit focused on countering various asymmetrical and unconventional threats in a wide theatre of combat environments. We strive to create an authentic combat experience to the greatest extent that the game will allow and we welcome players that are new to the game or just new to mil-sim/tactical sim.

Operations and training are held throughout the week and weekends, typically starting at 2000 GMT, with a focus on tactical realism.
